In Chinese mythology, Hou Yi saved humanity from scorching heat by shooting down 9 of the 10 suns. He could not see the future, though, as even with one sun left, Earth is still burning. In Hou Yi’s Final Act, I show the archer’s ultimate sacrifice: destroying the last sun, our sun, in an attempt to stop global warming. The fire burns around him and his horse, but as he draws his bow, he slings an arrow. It doesn’t matter if he hits the sun, though. At that point in the painting, we’re still doomed either way.
